Horace Richard (Dick) Crane was born in 1907 in Turlock, California, the son of Horace Stephen and Mary Alice (Roselle) Crane. He received his BS from California Institute of Technology in 1930 and his PhD in 1934. He came to the Physics Department of the University of Michigan in 1935 and spent his career there.
